Running is a great way to experience the outdoors. Individuals can heighten that experience by foregoing their headphones and music in order to listen to the world around them while they run. Sometimes, it’s the sounds of nature that help to center a runner and allow them to concentrate, help them feel the work that their bodies are doing. There are five sounds that, if you acknowledge them, can make your run a truly grounding and relaxing experience.

The Ocean and Seagulls.  Listening to the crashing of the waves and the calling of the birds can sometimes create a zen-like experience for a runner. This type of sound allows the runner to focus on their natural movements, to feel the power of their stride, unaffected by a playlist of artificial sounds.

The Wind in the Trees. The rustling of the wind through trees and leaves can inspire one to push harder and concentrate fully on their movements, the endorphins brought on by a good run.

People in Conversation. People who are engaged in conversation can create a soothing background for runners who  tend to get lost in their workouts and in their own thoughts.

Children Playing. When running through neighborhoods, the sound of children playing can bring a feeling of innocence and fun to the individual running. Children yelling with joy is bound to bring a smile to a runner’s face, taking them away from their activity for a moment.

The Sound of One’s Own Breath.  For a runner, listening to their own breathing patterns as they run is a great way to stay grounded and focused on the task at hand – whether it’s a five mile run or a jog around the block. That sound can key you in to how your training is progressing as well.
